Woodworking is a dangerous hobby. If you follow some common sense rules, you can decrease the risk of serious injury. You should not work hurriedly in the wood shop or have an “it won’t happen to me” attitude. You should develop your habit using the following pieces of safety equipment from the start and you will never work without this safety equipment. Here we mention some safety rules which you should habituate to make your woodworking safer and more enjoyable.
Wear Safety Equipment
A most important rule of woodworking is to wear proper safety equipment. Hearing protection is one of them. When you are working with loud power tools and machinery like routers, surface planers and joiners then you should wear hearing protection. Two common type of hearing protection available in the market expandable earplugs and earmuffs. Earmuffs slightly better protect your ear. In working time, if you habituated with the hearing protection, it will help you from long-term hearing loss. Safety glass is another most important piece of safety equipment. Now various styles of safety glass available in the market but generally all are same features like lenses, side screens to protect against dust debris created by the power tools. Wear them all safety equipment before working and don’t leave them until you leave.
Wear Proper Cloth
Whenever working with wood, mind it to avoid loose-fitting cloth. You would not want any of your fine cloth to become entangled in a saw blade. Be careful about your dress and protect your body from any wayward wood chips that might result from cutting. Don’t wear any dangling jewelry such as neck chain or bracelets.
Avoid Drugs and Alcohol
If you intoxicated then stay out from the wood shop. Because intoxication and woodworking are a horrible mix. In the alcoholic situation, if you work with this powerful tools it won’t be harmful to you.
Disconnect power while Blade Changing
If you need to change the blades or bits on a power tool then at first you disconnect the electricity to the power tool then change your blade or bit. Many woodworkers lost their finger for forgetting the simple but too much important rules.
Use One Extension Cord
Use one heavy duty extension cord for the total tool. The extension cord helps you to switch on/off the tool. For this cord, you are remembering to plug or unplug the power tool when moving one to another tool or making a bit or blade changes.
Use sharp blades or bits
The dull cutting tool is dangerous. If your blade or bit is not as sharp as it should be then the woodworker will have to work harder to complete the required task. The dull tools kick back again and again and this situation the woodworker gives full body pressure and faces many problems. Another side a sharper tool produces a clean cut that’s a big advantage.
Never Reach Over a Blade to Remove cut offs
If you are working on a table saw, miter saw etc never puts your hands anywhere near the moving blade. Just wait and give some time until the blade has stopped moving and then reach for the cutoff.
If someone calls in or distracted while in the middle of performing an action with a power tool, then it will be dangerous for you. Always pay attention to the woodworking tool, distraction may become in disaster.
Respirators and Face Masks for Woodworking Safety
Routers produce a lot of dust. When you are using these tools, use a dust mask to protect the fine particles from entering your lungs. Spraying time the varnish or paint, a respirator is a better choice to keep you any harmful effects of using such chemicals.
